Annual Well-Woman Exam Q & A

Why Do I Need a Well-Woman Exam?

A well-woman exam is a vital part of preventive health care for every woman. Although it may seem like it's only necessary to visit your OB/GYN if you have questions or have a women's health issue, that's actually an ineffective approach to overall health and wellness. If you don't seek help until you already have a medical issue, treatment will often be much more complex and costly.

Many health issues, including major diseases like cervical cancer, can potentially be avoided if you have a well-woman exam at least once each year. Additionally, a well-woman exam is the ideal time for Dr. Charles to:

  • Monitor any ongoing conditions or illnesses
  • Diagnose new or emerging illnesses
  • Discuss family planning with you

A well-woman exam is a small investment of your time that can yield great health benefits.

What Occurs During a Well-Woman Exam?

A well-woman exam has two basic components, a:

  • Pelvic exam
  • Clinical breast exam

During the pelvic exam, Dr. Charles will examine your inner and outer reproductive organs. During this exam, he will ask you some questions regarding your sexual and reproductive health, including questions about:

  • Sex partners
  • Your menstrual cycle frequency and duration
  • Current birth control methods
  • Symptoms related to your menstrual cycle or hormonal changes
  • Current medications, especially those that impact sexual or reproductive health

During the pelvic exam, a pap smear, HPV test, and other tests may be performed if needed. The clinical breast exam is a brief exam of the breast tissue with the goal of identifying lumps or other irregularities. A mammogram may be recommended if you're due for one or if the clinical breast exam reveals a potential issue that needs further investigation.

How Often Do I Need a Well-Woman Exam?

In most cases, Dr. Charles asks patients to come in for a well-woman exam every year. In cases where a patient is suffering from a condition like endometriosis, or in cases where the patient has suffered from cancer in the past, the exams may need to be scheduled twice a year or more frequently. Dr. Charles is happy to work with you on a personal basis to determine the right exam schedule for you.
